The Flash Movie: Ezra Miller Says Rick Famuyiwa’s Exit is ‘Deeply Unfortunate’

The Flash Movie: Ezra Miller Says Rick Famuyiwa’s Exit is ‘Deeply Unfortunate’

Warner Bros first introduced their DC Extended Universe with Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, though the shared superhero world exponentially expanded with this year’s releases, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. Batman V Superman introduced a number of heroes, many of which are expected to star in solo outings as part of the larger DCEU slate. The Flash movie, for instance, was announced to star Ezra Miller as Barry Allen with an expected release date in March 2018.

However, The Flash film production has hit a number of roadblocks since it was first announced. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’s Seth Grahame-Smith was initially expected to direct, but left the project earlier this year. Then, Dope’s Rick Famuyiwa signed on to helm The Flash, but parted ways with the film, reportedly due to creative differences, last week. Now, Miller comments on Famuyiwa’s exit and his hope for The Flash movie’s future.

During a roundtable interview with Screen Rant promoting his next release, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miller spoke about losing Famuyiwa and the difficulties that can be part of the process of bringing a movie to life. He said:

“It’s deeply unfortunate, I’m very sad that things didn’t work out with Rick [Famuyiwa], but I also understand that these processes are complicated and really involve a lot of different factors. I trust in the process and I really trust Warner Bros with this property and I’m really excited to do it — however it happens.”

The Flash co-star Kiersey Clemmons, who will play Iris West, previously offered her thoughts on Famuyiwa’s exit, saying it was “very upsetting” since he was “one of the main reasons I wanted to do the movie.” Clemmons and Famuyiwa previously worked together on Dope. While on board The Flash, Famuyiwa additionally received praise from Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street), who came up with the film’s story.

Certainly, those who were excited to see Famuyiwa’s take on The Flash may be disappointed he left the project, but it’s possible Warner Bros may use a version of the script he had a hand in. However, Warner Bros has brought in top notch talent on their DCEU films before, and it’s likely the eventual director of The Flash will offer a unique and compelling experience.

That said, until Warner Bros does decide who will helm The Flash, it remains to be seen how the film will come together — though, considering Miller’s comment about production starting “this year,” we’ll presumably hear something soon. Still, with talent like Miller, Clemmons, as well as the duo of Lord and Miller, involved in the project, The Flash still has potential to please DC Comics fans and casual moviegoers alike.
