Suicide Squad Video: Every Deleted Joker Scene

Suicide Squad Video: Every Deleted Joker Scene

In the aftermath of Man of Steel and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros. and DC Films were looking for a way to reinvigorate interest in the young DCEU. In an effort to do that, the decision was made to alter the approach with Suicide Squad. The first trailer showed a gritty supervillain film featuring some lesser-known characters, which, in retrospect, is vastly different than the final product.

One of the more polarizing aspects of the film was its depiction of the Joker, headed up by a performance from Academy Award-winner Jared Leto. Despite being a significant aspect of the film’s marketing, Joker’s role in the film was smaller than expected, leading to Leto voicing his displeasure with how the film was cut. The new extended cut gave some hope that the Clown Prince of Crime would see his screen time restored, but that wasn’t the case either. Now, a new video shows all the clips of the Joker used to market the film that failed to make either cut.

YouTuber RedDawnHanger77 (via Comicbook) compiled a video of photographs, actual footage, and descriptions of more scenes that Leto’s Joker was involved in. The result shows a much more violent version of Joker than audiences saw, leading many to likely wonder why the scenes were left on the cutting room floor.

One of the more interesting scenes is Joker having one of his henchmen hold a gun to Harleen Quinzel’s head as she is strapped to table. This happens before she takes her chemical bath to become Harley Quinn. Much has been made over the relationship between the two in the film, and any additional insight into the characters’ dynamic would have been greatly appreciated. It’s unclear whether or not this excised scene would have offered suitable clarification or if it would have further muddied the waters, but it would have been interesting to see.

There are also a few new/alternate scenes giving Joker the chance to get his hands dirty, killing guards that are already injured, and a few scenes were he physically harms himself as a result of his plans failing to come to fruition. Now that these scenes and their descriptions have emerged, the decision to keep Joker’s role minimal in both cuts becomes more questionable. Leto’s performance may not have been exactly what some people imagined, but with so little time on screen, is it even possible for him to win audiences over?

This will likely not be the last time audiences see Joker, especially with him and Harley now running free. An appearance in The Batman could be possible or he may have to wait until an as-yet-unannounced Suicide Squad 2. As for now, fans of Leto’s Joker will have to hold out hope that more of his scenes become available to watch, but unless a Joker cut of the film is made, that seems unlikely at this point.
