Power Rangers Motion Posters Offer Closer Look at Helmet Designs

Опубликовано: 22.10.2016

Lionsgate is launching what could become a lucrative new young adult franchise for the studio (now that the Hunger Games, Twilight and, seemingly, Divergent movie series are done until further notice) in 2017 with Power Rangers: a big screen reboot of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers property that launched Saban Entertainment’s larger Power Rangers brand over two decades ago. A teaser trailer for the film has now been released, offering a sneak peek at the movie’s new versions of the classic Rangers characters Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Billy (RJ Cyler), Trini (Becky Gomez) and Zack (Ludi Lin), as well as the reboot’s version of this particular Rangers team’s origin story and backstory alike.

The Power Rangers movie reboot will feature re-imagined versions of several other Mighty Morphin characters and elements too, including the Rangers’ mentor Zordon (Bryan Cranston), Zordon’s robotic associate Alpha 5 (Bill Hader), the villainous Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) and her minions – and of course, the Rangers’ weapons, Zords and their supersuits and costumes. Fresh Power Rangers motion posters call further attention to these Power Rangers’ tweaked helmet designs in the film, in particular.

You can check out those Power Rangers motion posters (as were released through the film’s official Twitter account), below:

These helmet designs, which were on display at the International Comic-Con this past summer, are certainly more practical (and protective) in appearance than the cheaper-looking (and plastic) helmets worn by the Rangers back in both the original Mighty Morphin TV show and the 1995 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie. Their crystalline texture is in keeping with the general aesthetic of these new Rangers’ costumes and Power Coins (the latter of which appear in the film’s teaser trailer) – at the same time, retaining the classic animal-themed designs that correspond to the animal power source for each of the individual Power Rangers.

Overall, the designs of the Rangers helmets and costumes alike seem to strike a healthy balance between harkening back to the feel of the original Mighty Morphin franchise and giving the property’s elements a shiny makeover. Power Rangers director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) has made similar comments before concerning the logic behind the Rangers’ costume designs in the film, saying that “You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans.” Whether or not the powers that be behind Power Rangers will prove successful in that respect, of course, remains to be seen.
