Gal Gadot Wants Halle Berry for Wonder Woman 2 Love Interest

Gal Gadot Wants Halle Berry for Wonder Woman 2 Love Interest

While the comic book film world is busy discussing the ins and outs of Marvel’s latest entry into the ever-expanding MCU with Doctor Strange, another classic character made waves recently when Warner Bros., in a bit of calculated gamesmanship, released the second trailer for the upcoming Wonder Woman solo film. Since then, the trailer has been picked over time and again, in an attempt to parse as many details as possible, months ahead of the film’s theatrical release date. The film’s setting, action, themes, and especially its potential villains, continue to stimulate a healthy amount of discussion.

But so does the appearance of Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, who, as seen in the new trailer, takes on the role of Diana Prince’s love interest, and the man Wonder Woman is inclined to rescue on more than one occasion. This is in keeping with the film’s comic book roots, as Trevor has long played a role in Wonder Woman’s super-heroic history, first appearing in All Star Comics #8 all the way back in 1941. While that romance is certainly going to be a key part in the narrative of the upcoming film, recent comments made by Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka state that Diana Prince is in fact bisexual, ostensibly opening the door for comic books and films to explore the character’s romantic relationships – both past and present – in a way it has not had the opportunity to do so before.

The discussion over Diana’s sexual orientation eventually found its way to the film’s star, Gal Gadot, who responded that while Diana being bisexual is not addressed in the Wonder Woman movie directly, it is something that “makes sense” and could happen. As the discussion over the new trailer erupted over the weekend, Gadot was a highly sought-after interview subject and, unsurprisingly, she was asked again about Diana’s potential same-sex romantic relationships. In an interview with an Israeli talk show Good Night with Guy Pines (via Batman News), Gadot once again spoke to the idea of Diana being involved with women and even offered a dream casting opportunity by nominating Academy Award-winner Halle Berry as her love interest in Wonder Woman 2.

Gadot said (in comments translated by Twitter user Roger Allen):

“I saw her the other day, Halle Berry. She’s so beautiful. Wow! She’s gorgeous! So… yeah, I could do it with her.”

As far as potential love interests go, Gadot certainly sets a high bar with Berry. Having won the aforementioned Oscar for her role in Monster’s Ball, Berry has taken on a number of different roles over the years, ranging from the X-Men films, where she played Storm, to a stint as Jinx in the final Pierce Brosnan James Bond movie, Die Another Day. More recently, Berry starred alongside Tom Hanks in the ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, before heading to television on CBS’ Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi drama Extant. Next, fans will be able to see her as Ginger in the upcoming sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

While Gadot’s off-the-cuff dream casting is miles away from becoming a reality, it does demonstrate what an enormous opportunity this is for Warner Bros. and DC Comics to increase inclusivity in terms of how one of their most famous characters is depicted on the big screen. With interest in Wonder Woman very high, following the most recent trailer and her appearance earlier this year in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, it’s never too soon to for the film’s star to begin a discussion of this sort, and to demonstrate to the studio that a female love interest for Diana Prince is something she’s all for.
