Ant-Man Becomes Giant in New Civil War Concept Art

One of the joys of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that even the characters playing supporting roles in another hero’s movie tend to get their own moment to shine. Case in point – Captain America: Civil War, in which Scott Lang a.k.a. Ant-Man’s reveal of his new giant powers was one of the most crowd-pleasing moments of the film. It takes a lot to outshine not just Captain America in his own film, but Spider-Man in his MCU debut. Paul Rudd’s charm, plus a meaningful boost to his heroic legacy made this one of Marvel’s best guest appearances yet.

In the wake of Civil War‘s release, illustrator Andy Park has shared some gorgeous conceptual artwork that he created during the planning phase of the film. While some of these are merely precursors to what made it to cinema screens in live action, a number more have revealed previous aspects of the film which have since been changed. (For instance, Giant-Man originally fought Captain America.)

Now Park has been kind enough to share yet another of his early visions of the film – the giant-ification of Ant-Man. Take a look:

Perhaps the most interesting takeaway from this image is how differently the moment is playing out than it did in the film. In the film, Scott heroically goes giant to create a big distraction so Cap can escape to the team’s actual mission. This image makes it look like the growth has taken Cap by surprise. Perhaps this was also from an earlier period of the story when Scott Lang was on #TeamIronMan?

Whatever the case, the image is certainly striking. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo reportedly had to fight for the inclusion of Giant-Man in the film. Not because the brass wanted to save it for Ant-Man and The Wasp, but because they thought it would be “silly.” One would hope that they eventually came to their senses with very little prompting, but images like this couldn’t have hurt in convincing them that Giant-Man, like so many of his kin, are not just silly, but awesome. (And that’s why people love them.)

Stay tuned to Screen Rant for all the latest news on these silly/awesome Marvel heroes as it hits.
